How To Replace A Shower Pan

Replacing a shower pan requires careful removal, drain alignment, structural inspection, and waterproofing. Incorrect installation may cause leaks beneath tiles, damage the subfloor, and create expensive repairs after the bathroom is completed.

Remove the Existing Shower Pan

Shut off the water supply and protect nearby surfaces. Remove the shower screen, lower wall finishes, drain cover, and sealant around the pan. Disconnect the drain, then lift or cut out the old base without damaging concealed pipes.

Inspect the subfloor, wall framing, drain body, and waterproof layer. Soft timber, corrosion, mold, or movement must be corrected before installing the new shower base.

Install and Test the Replacement

Check the new pan dimensions, drain position, threshold height, and wall clearances. Prepare a flat and structurally stable base according to the installation instructions. Connect the drain with compatible seals and ensure the pan remains level without rocking.

CSA B45.5-22/IAPMO Z124-2022 specifies requirements for the materials, construction, performance, testing, and marking of plastic plumbing fixtures, including shower bases. EN 14527:2016+A1:2018 covers the cleanability and durability of shower trays used for domestic purposes.

Complete the waterproof connection between the pan, walls, and drain before reinstalling tiles or panels. Carry out a controlled water test and inspect every joint before closing the surrounding structure.
