Taking a hot shower can set off a fire alarm when heavy steam reaches a nearby smoke alarm. NFPA guidance notes that steam from a shower can trigger nuisance alarms, and it recommends placing smoke alarms at least 36 inches from the door of a bathroom with a shower or tub. NFPA materials also note that steam-prone areas are not suitable locations for smoke detection devices.
