How To Take Out Shower Drain

Removing a shower drain begins with identifying whether you need to remove only the grate and strainer or the complete drain body. A full drain replacement may affect the shower pan, waterproof membrane, and waste pipe, so the surrounding construction must be inspected before work begins.

Remove the Drain Carefully

Stop using the shower and clear standing water. Remove visible screws, then lift the grate with a plastic tool. Take out the hair strainer and clean away sealant or mineral deposits around the drain opening.

A threaded drain can normally be loosened with a suitable drain wrench. A compression-style drain may require access from below to release the locking nut and gasket. Do not force the drain flange, since excessive movement can crack the shower base or damage the waterproof connection.

In tiled showers, the drain body may be integrated with the mortar bed and membrane. Removing it may require opening part of the shower floor. ANSI A118.10-2023 specifies requirements for bonded waterproof membranes used beneath tile, so any damaged membrane must be repaired before the new drain is installed.

Check the New Drain Specification

ASME A112.18.2-2020/CSA B125.2:20 covers plumbing waste fittings and defines requirements related to materials, dimensions, performance, and marking. Before replacement, confirm the outlet diameter, connection method, flange height, grate size, material, flow requirement, and compatibility with the shower pan.

Manufacturer and Project Control

A direct sanitary hardware manufacturer can coordinate drain dimensions, concealed valves, outlets, trims, finishes, and installation accessories more efficiently than a trader relying on several suppliers.

Our OEM and ODM process includes drawing review, mold development, CNC machining, finish confirmation, assembly, leakage testing, inspection, and export packing.

For bulk projects, confirm drain type, pipe connection, waterproofing method, material grade, finish sample, flow capacity, spare seals, installation instructions, and packaging. Quality checkpoints should cover dimensional accuracy, thread fit, flange flatness, drainage performance, leakage, corrosion resistance, and surface condition. Export orders should also match local plumbing codes, material declarations, product markings, traceability, and destination-market requirements.
